I was photographing an Eared Grebe on the Green River and watched this American White Pelican fly over and circle back. I set my camera on the bird as it came in for a landing on the river. Little did I know this bird would hit the water, go under, and come up with a fish in its bill, a quite large Rainbow Trout. Here is the series of images.

Kyle,
I checked my metadata and the whole event took 9 seconds from hitting the water until the fish was in the pelican’s throat. It went right down and in the last photo you can see the pelican’s neck bulged from the catch. Yes, it was a big fish! The pelican then left the scene but I wondered myself how much the fish was wriggling. It had to still be alive!
Amazing series here! Wow that did look like a huge fish! Does the fish out up a good fight and can you see it desperately wriggling inside the Pelicans pouch?? Did the pelican really manage to eat that whole thing, if eaten, does it get swallowed wriggling all the way down as well?!
Awesome shots…you are amazing.
